Insurance in The Emerging Markets: Overview & Prospects for Islamic Insurance

 Experts' Views

Sohail Jaffer
Takaful, or Sharia- compliant insurance, is one of the most dynamic areas of the rapidly expanding market for Islamic financial services. According to a recent report published by Fitch Ratings, total global premium contributions reached $2.6 bn in 2006, and industry analysts estimate that the annual growth of the market may be as high as 40% in the booming GCC and well into double digits in a number of other regions.

Retakaful is no longer the“missing link” in the takaful operation. We have now six operational retakaful, four newcomers and global players’ windows. The available retakaful treaty capacity exceeds the needs of almost 90% of the existing takaful operators. However, takaful will continue relying on conventional insurance for specialty lines and large risks, and retakaful will continue to rely on conventional for retrocession.

Takaful illustrates the act of a group of people who agree to reciprocally guarantee each other against certain loss or damage that may be inflicted upon any one of them. Every participant contributes a sum of money to a common takaful fund. By contributing to the fund the participant undertakes a contract (a’qad) to become one of the takaful participants by agreeing to mutually help each other, should any of the participants suffer a loss as covered under the takaful contract.

Over time a preference by Muslims (and hopefully non-Muslims alike) should emerge for ethical products & push up Takaful utilization rates globally up from 0.5% today closer to global norms. Eventually by capturing even 1% of global risk coverage, Takaful volumes can achieve $38 Billion in business worldwide, which would position Takaful alongside cooperative and mutual insurance as a truly global player and a risk protection mechanism of choice for millions of policyholders.

Takaful is growing, it has been the fastest growing form of insurance for many years and there are still so many new markets around the world where it is poised to enter. We see so many investors, banks and institutions associated with it who are committed to the industry with their dollars. There is good demand for Takaful, it is an ethical and fair proposition. It appeals to many and it is in harmony with anything we want to do for the good of society.
